The Right to Know

Citrus Punch_1 Citrus Punch_2 Citrus Punch_3 Citrus Punch_4

Wearing:
Zara Orange / Citrus print top
Ralph Lauren shorts (DIY high waisted shorts, which used to be pants)
Louis Vuitton mini backpack
Forever 21 multi strand pearl necklace
Vintage belt
Vintage bracelet, gifted gold bangle bracelets
Steve Madden sandals
Mac Lipstick "Morange"

I'm unsure of how to start off by writing this, but I thought I'd bring something up since this outfit has a food-print on it.

In my old blog I spoke of Monsanto and how horrendous their genetically modified and patented foods are for the earth.  Have any of you heard of California's Prop 37 yet?  I urge you to check out their website www.carighttoknow.org.  If prop 37 passes, all genetically modified food will be required to come with a label.  This is a HUGE deal because it effects every single living thing on this planet. Genetically modified foods (GMOs) are everywhere and Monsanto has spent millions of dollars trying to keep us in the dark about what we're eating.  There was a recent study conducted where scientists fed genetically modified corn to rats and found that those rats grew giant tumors. In another study, mice began to grow hair on their tongue and most of them became infertile by the third generation.  And yet another study (back in 2010) was performed on hamsters with devastating results.  You probably have never heard of this because of how extremely biased the media is.  The FDA also does a wonderful job of keeping you from knowing about this.  If you want to see how gruesome the effects of eating GMOs are, click HERE.  I must warn you, it's pretty graphic.

There is a reason why cancer, diabetes, and obesity are at an all time high right now in the U.S.  Chronic illnesses and obesity have been linked to GMOs.  For that reason, other countries like Russia and France have banned genetically modified foods.  One would think that the United States would follow in their footsteps.

So even if you don't live in California, you need to know about this.  If proposition 37 passes, other states can follow in our footsteps.  This may very well be the last chance we have to label our food.  Don't you want to know what you're eating?  Even if you think GMOs are a wonderful thing, wouldn't you want to know if your food has been altered in some way?

This is a fashion blog, yes.  But there are some things much more important than fashion.  This is one of them.  Just to give you guys another example, over 85% of corn is genetically modified.  Do you know what that means?  We're eating corn that produces its own pesticide.  Sounds delicious, right?   If insects will die when they eat this, what do you think it's doing to us?  And avoiding corn entirely won't do any good either.  Corn by-products are found in almost everything (from baby formula to juice, soda, bread, and condiments).  This is exactly why I avoid all GMOs (or try to at least) and only eat organic foods.

Please pass this video along to your friends & loved ones!  Thanks for reading :)

  7. So, I'm looking at the comments and realized your words have fallen on deaf ears lol.

Reading this post just gave me another reason why I'm soooooo jealous of people who live in California. It is such a progressive state. A law like that would NEVER pass in Missouri or Kansas. In Romneyland, people are like "nobody is gonna tell me how to eat my taters! This here's Amurrrrka."

In the past five years, I've made huge leaps about eating healthier. Like, smoothies instead of dessert type of stuff. And then in the past year, I've been slowly incorporating organic milk/veggies as my budget allows. It just sucks that Whole Foods is so freaking expensive. It's disheartening that organic cost more, at least here in the midwest. Sometimes it really comes down to budget over health, which sucks.

You know, this could just be a conspiracy theory that I'm spitting out, but I wonder if this whole thing has jumpstarted the rapid autism climb. In my six years of being a news reporter, I have done SO MANY stories about autism. Like, when we were born the numbers were way down and in the past ten years, it has skyrocketed. I know there's been fingers pointed at vaccinations, and even at cell phone usage, but this could also play a part. That's frightening.

  9. Good post on an important topic. More people need to know about genetically-modified food. Agribusiness plays fast and loose with public health in its pursuit of private profit.

Oh, and your outfit is cute! Love the top.

  10. First, this outfit is absolutely adorable - the fruit, the belt, the shorts! Perfect! Second, I definitely think that we all have the right to know exactly what we are eating...this would be a huge step in the right direction! I wish more states made issues such as these known!

This is my first time stopping by...and I'm sure I'll be back! Great post!

  34. I completely agree with YES on prop 37. Monsanto is a terrible company. They have "suicide seeds" which means after the frist generation of produce, they DIE and do not regenerate. Monsanto is going to kill off farmers independence (and sky rocket ours) single hand. Enron and Exon look like saints when compaired to Monsanto.

More importantly, this means that all of us should be ready to VOTE this year.

Great post Azu. And, I love your Stella McCartney inspired top!!

  35. It's a scary world we live in! I was so scared of some of the ingredients (even in baby food) that i always made my own. I just can't understand why this is happening! Well, actually i know it's all about money but it's simply unfair!

  42. I absolutely love this post! First, you look stunning in all the citrus shades and you have mile-long legs (jealous).. But most importantly this post has depth. In my mind, there is no issue greater than this one of Genetically Modified Foods. Everyone needs to take the blindfold off and become educated on what exactly is going into their body. Thanks for sharing this with everyone x
